What is NEW in this year CET?
Thank god! nothing much new.
In last few years there were a number of changes in the way the CET was conducted or in the way the seat selection process was held. Thankfully, this year there isn't any conspicuous change. It is more or less like the last year CET. However, following are the few minor changes you need to notice:

1. CET Cell has changed to KEA : The biggest change this year is the Name of the CET CELL from Common Entrance Test Cell to KARNATAKA EXAMINATION AUTHORITY. Since its inception in 1994 it was know as CET Cell. However, from this year it is known as KEA and not CET Cell. To expand the activities of the Common Entrance Test Cell the government in an order has converted the Common Entrance Test Cell in to an autonomous body Registered under Societies Registration Act 1960c called "Karnataka Examinations Authority". Now all the activities of the erstwhile CET Cell are being carried out by the Karnataka Examinations Authority and all transactions will take place in the name of KEA. The new avatar of CET Cell continues to function from its existing building near Malleshwaram 18th Cross, Bangalore.
2. No fraud in reserved seats : Another big change this year will be the publication of details of candidates who have selected seats under various reserved categories. After the vacancy round, KEA will publish on its website all the details of the candidates who have selected seats under the reserved category during seat selection process. The details include candidates fathers name, category under which the seat is selected and annual income of the parent etc.. This is to ensure complete transparency in the counseling process. Any one who finds that a candidate has furnished false details can raise an objection or challenge the information given.
3. Rural Certificate is must : The candidates who claim seat under rural category will have to obtain a rural study certificate from the respective school / high school issued by the head of the institution which should be countersigned by concerned Block Educational Officer (BEO) in a prescribed format.
4. Rural and Urban Confusion : General merit candidates who claim seat in rural category should also submit an income certificate issued from the concerned Tahasildar along with the rural study certificate in a prescribed format. 5. The candidates who have studied in few areas are not eligible to claim rural category seat. However, if the place where the candidate had studied from 1st to 10th standard had been declared as a rural area at the time of his / her studies, he / she will be eligible under rural quota, even though the same has been declared as urban area later.
5. NCC & Sports Certificate : The NCC and Sports Special category candidates have to obtain a certificate from the head of the institution where they have studied from 8th to 12th standard, for having participated in the NCC / Sports events and should compulsorily produce the same along with their NCC / Sports certificates to the KEA office on the notified dates. Otherwise, they will not be eligible for selection of seats under the respective special categories.
KEA : Karnataka Examinations Authority
This is the New Avatar of Erstwhile CET Cell
The Karnataka Examinations Authority is the new avatar of Karnataka Common Entrance Test Cell. The CET CELL as it was famous across India for about 13 years is now being called as KEA. This change in name will have no effect on you.
KEA functions as usual like the erstwhile CET cell. It conducts the Karnataka CET every year for admission to first year of Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Medical, Dental, Ayurveda, Unani, Homoeopathy, Indian Systems of Medicine and Naturopathy Yoga - courses under Government Quota in Karnataka Professional colleges.
But why is this change?
The Government of Karnataka had established the CET cell in 1994 for determining the merits of the candidates for admission to various professional degree colleges in Karnataka. But, with the advent of COMEDK and its parallel entrance tests and admission process the government CET was limited only to the government quota seats. As a result the activities of CET cell were reduced almost to half. Whereas, over a period of time, the CET cell has become a huge establishment with the state-of-the-art technology and a big building. It has also gained the expertise in conducting the written tests and the counseling for extremely large number of candidates. In this background, the government, instead of limiting the CET cell's activities, decided to expand its horizon.

Hence, by an order dated 20-12-2007 the government of Karnataka converted the Common Entrance Test Cell in to KARNATAKA EXAMINATION AUTHORITY. Now, KEA - the new avatar of CET cell can conduct the written tests and counselling for any government or private institutions. KEA functions from the same building which housed the CET cell for all these years.

What is COMEDK ?
Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka
COMEDK - Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka is the association of Private Medical, Dental and Engineering Colleges of Karnataka. It conducts a parallel entrance test to government CET for determining merit of students seeking admissions to the first year of Medical, Dental and Engineering courses of the Member Institutions in Karnataka.
Entrance Tests:
COMEDK conducts 2 annual Entrance Tests. One for admission to Under Graduate Courses (MBBS, BDS, BE, BArch). This is called as Under Graduate Entrance Test - UGET and the other one for Post Graduate courses in Medical, Dental and Engineering courses called Post Graduate Entrance Test - PGET.
COMEDK entrance test, publication of test score and rank list will be followed by a centralised counselling. Theses processes are modeled on the Karnataka CET.
After AICTE, MCI and DCI approve the intake (number of seats) for various colleges every year, the COMEDK, the KMCA and the Government share the seats. This is called as the government - private seat sharing ratio. After this seat sharing, COMEDK fills its share of seats by its UGET or PGET.
COMEDK Colleges also have a limited number of NRI quota and the Management quota seats. No entrance test is conducted to fill these seats. This is purely the Management's discretion.

What is KMCA ?
Karnataka Religious & Linguistic Minority Professional Colleges AssociationIn Short - Karnataka Minority Colleges Association

Actually it is KRLMPCA - Karnataka Religious & Linguistic Minority Professional Colleges Association. But, in short it is known as KMCA - Karnataka Minority Colleges Association.
As COMEDK - is the umbrella association for all the Un-aided Medical, Dental and Engineering colleges in Karnataka, KRLMPCA - is the umbrella association for all religious and linguistic minority Medical, Dental and Engineering colleges of Karnataka.
Entrance Tests:This association conducts Under Graduate and Post Graduate Entrance Test every year to fill its share of seats. Member institutions of KRLMPCA have more share of seats than that of COMEDK institutions.

KMCA entrance test, publication of test score and rank list will be followed by a centralised counselling. Theses processes are modeled on COMEDK CET. After AICTE, MCI and DCI approve the intake (number of seats) for various colleges every year, the COMEDK, the KMCA and the Government share the seats. This is called as the government - private seat sharing ratio. After this seat sharing, KMCA fills its share of seats by its UGET or PGET as the case may be.

Why are these called as Minority Colleges? With the Constitutional Provision, many educational institutions have been set up in India to help certain sections of the society which belong either Minority Religions like Islam or Linguistic Minority community like Tulu. In these institutions there will be reservations for the candidates belonging to the respective minority quota.
