Dibrugarh University to open engineering institute

DIBRUGARH, March 24: The Dibrugarh University is all set to open an Institute of Engineering and Technology within its campus this year. The establishment will offer four-year B Tech degrees in Computer Science and Engineering, Electronic and Communication Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

It has been granted Rs 14.25 crore under the 12th Finance Commission. NAAC has also recommended a grant of Rs 10 crore.

During an interaction with media persons, Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof KK Deka, said that they have already submitted the proposal to the AICTE and granted the ‘Letter of Intent.’ The present effort is to offer a wide choice of courses to students to ensure they meet the employment criteria demanded in the professional world.

The university will be introducing MA in Hindi and Philosophy, Bachelor of Physical Education and Advanced Post Graduate Diploma in Petroleum Exploration Geophysics in 2010-2011. The construction of buildings have been going on in full swing to accommodate the students of various courses like Management Studies, Jurisdical Studies, Atmospheric Studies and Biotechnology. A Management Information Centre will soon be opened.

A six-member team of NAAC is presently here for the re-evaluation of the university. The Deputy Registrar (Academic) of Dibrugarh University, Dr Rajib Handique, said that the effort was to get the top grade from the team.

Meanwhile, the groundwork to promulgate e-governance in the university is in its last stage. Once complete, it would be possible to declare the results early and make it easily accessible to students. Regarding the delay in the declaration of law results, Dr Handique said that the examiners were always late in submitting the corrected answer sheets. THE SENTINEL
