The Freshman Orientation Programme

The Freshman Orientation Programme for the the academic year 2008-2009 was held by BITS, Pilani-Dubai at its campus at the Dubai International Academic City . The Programme was conducted to orient the newly admitted students to the Education process at BITS, Pilani- Dubai, Examinations, Evaluations and Grading systems, Student Welfare Activities, Hostel life, Administrative matters, Rules and Regulations of the Institution, Student facilities etc.

The admission for the academic year 2008 - 09 has been very successful. The admission figures saw a steep increase this year, having gone up to 602 admitted candidates for the academic year 2008 – 09.

The Admission figures of BITS, Pilani-Dubai have had a constant growth throughout the eight years, since inception.The students' strength has grown from 61 to 1750 in the last 8 years with 27% of the total strength being girls. It is the only technological university in the Middle East attracting a large number of brilliant students from India , UAE, KSA, Oman , Kuwait , Qatar , Bahrain , Tunisia , South Africa , Nigeria , Egypt , Africa, Thailand , Indonesia , China and Canada . In fact, BPD has reversed the trend of high school children going from U.A.E to India for their Engineering studies.

BPD's admission criteria is stringent, transparent, strict and purely merit and preference based. We have admitted only those students who not only scored the minimum overall aggregate of 60% for all the subjects in the qualifying exam, but also met the stipulation of 60% in the aggregate of the marks in Physics, Chemistry and Maths subjects. Among all the students admitted, about 77 students have obtained an aggregate of above 90%.The students are from various national, international and state high school boards, out of which about 62% of the students are from the CBSE board.

Out of the 602 students admitted this year, 412 of them are boys and 190 are girl students.

BITS, Pilani – Dubai offered 7 Engineering disciplines for admission this year- B.E (Hons.) Computer Science, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology. All the programmes are of 4 years duration and an Internship of 7 and a half months in reputed industries is included within these 4 years.

The Orientation Programme was attended by about 1200 people (the newly admitted students with their parents). Dr. M. Ramachandran, Director, BPD introduced the Toppers from different boards who have joined BPD to the audience.

Dr.M.Ramachandran, Director, BPD, commenced the orientation program by a detailed overview of BPD. Dr. L.K. Maheshwari, Vice-chancellor of BITS, Pilani graced the occasion and familiarized the new students to the parent campus - BITS, Pilani-Rajasthan. It was followed by several Heads of Departments who gave orientation to the gathering about the various aspects of BPD programmes and administration.

The highlight of the day was when the senior students of 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th year extended their warm welcome to the juniors through one representative from each year. Another student by name Namita Das, who just graduated from BITS, Pilani-Dubai and is proceeding to Stanford University for a Masters programme gave an orientation to all the freshers on successful student life.
