Tezpur Medical College construction work on in full swing

TEZPUR, July 13 – Construction work of the Tezpur Medical College at Tumuki near Bihaguri Development Block of Sonitpur district has been going on in full swing.

Heavy machinery and altogether 1,230 labourers are working day and night to complete the allotted work by 2011. The fifth medical college of the State at Tumuki Agricultural Farm, some 18 km away from Tezpur town, is expected to fulfil the long cherished dream of the people of the North Bank.

It may be mentioned that for construction of the ongoing medical college an allocation of Rs 160 cr was sanctioned. Out of the allocated amount, Rs 125 crore was for the buildings of the medical college and the remaining 35 crore for miscellaneous work. After the foundation stone laying function of the medical college by the President of India Pratibha Devi Singh Patil on October 20 last year under a joint venture, three reputed construction companies of the State respectively TMC, EPIL (Engineering Project India Limited) and Gautom Construction are engaged in the construction of TMC.

In the meantime, KP Das, Chief Engineer and Samit Hoom, JE who are in charge of overall construction work of the medical college while interacting with this Correspondent disclosed that earth work is about to be completed and piling work of the main building was on where hundreds of local unemployed youths are engaged.

He further said that though some evil minded people of the area wanted to divert their mind through misinterpretations of the insurgency problem, but as the district administration is providing full support and cooperation till date, no any problem was faced by them.

“If the drawing (architecture) of the medical college is approved soon, then completion of the construction work could be expected as per the time schedule,” Das said while answering a query regarding completion of the college.

On the other hand, Tanka Bahadur Rai, Speaker, Assam Assembly and local MLA who is also the chairman of the construction committee of TMC, told this Correspondent that the upcoming Tezpur Medical College, which is located close to Arunachal Pradesh, would have a positive fallout in its surrounding areas as it would be a great boon to a large number of people.

As soon as the college starts functioning, it will cater to the patients from Arunachal Pradesh as well as from neighbouring districts of Sonitpur, Darrang, Nagaon, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur, he added. SOURCE: ASSAM TRIBUNE
