IIT Guwahati to hold half marathon in run-up to annual fest

GUWAHATI, Aug 2 – In a pioneering effort, students of IIT Guwahati are to trigger off one of the most ambitious sporting events of the region. Under Techniche’09, the annual techno-management festival of IIT Guwahati, they have decided to launch a half marathon from this year.

According to sources in IIT Guwahati, in consonance with the theme ‘Go Green’ for this year’s Techniche, one of the mega events would be the half marathon, named Green Run which is set to take place on an arterial route of Guwahati on August 30 as a prologue to the main programme of Techniche beginning September 3 in the IIT campus.

The marathon has segments for both professionals and the general public. The segment for the general public is a stretch of 8 kilometres starting at Jalukbari and for professionals it would be 21 km. While the professional segment is test of mind and body, the general segment provides an opportunity to the public to participate in a long run on a Sunday morning.

According to the organisers, though the complete stretch is 21 km in length, it will have refreshment and first aid points at regular intervals making this a conducive opportunity for the general public to run for the noble cause like the green movement. The inaugural ceremony of the half marathon is set to take place at 5.30 am and is likely to be graced by a number of people of eminence.

The registrations for the event are already open and forms are available at Barista, Baskin Robins and also at some leading hospitals of the city including Downtown Hospital, International Hospital, Arya Hospital, Chhatribari Christian Hospital, Wintrobe Hospital, Dispur Hospital Pvt Ltd and Sanjeevani Hospital.

The completed forms may be deposited at drop-boxes in the same locations. The registration is free but requires a medical check up which is done for free in the above hospitals. The event boasts of prize money worth Rs 2 lakh and is well supported by many leading companies and firms. With an aim of spreading environmental awareness and creating knowledge about other related movements amongst the masses, the event has already stirred public interest. ASSAM TRIBUNE
