Rs 1.55 cr Central grant to GU Biotechnology Department

GUWAHATI, Aug 4 – The Government of India has sanctioned Rs 1.55 crore to the Department of Biotechnology, Gauhati University for undertaking research and training in bio-medical and basic clinical sciences.

The department, buoyed by the approval of the Central Government is confident that the research work carried out under this project will contribute towards bringing different viral diseases which are common in this part of the country under control.

The project will also include scientific study of medicinal plants that are part of the traditional knowledge of the region.

The head of the department, Prof MC Kalita said that the project would also develop manpower and create job opportunities.

It needs to be mentioned here that under the project, a one year diploma course and a six-month certificate course on clinical science will be offered.

“One of the major objectives of the project is to understand the underlying molecular, genetic, viral and environmental factors as etiological agents in the development of different diseases and carcinomas prevalent in North East India using a molecular and basic clinical research approach,” said Kalita.
