Workshop by NEIST concludes

JORHAT, Oct 8: The two-day workshop organized by the North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST) for knowledge enhancement of college and school teachers of nearby areas concluded here, today. The workshop is held under the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research scheme, Faculty training and motivation and adoption of schools and colleges by CSIR labs, which was the brainchild of former Director General of CSIR Dr RA Mashelkar.

Dr Mashelkar felt that there was need for continuously upgrading the knowledge of teachers in the emerging frontier areas of Science. He also felt that it was necessary to upgrade the infrastructure facility of the colleges and schools in these areas.

Director of NEIST Dr PG Rao while welcoming the teacher trainees and the faculty for the course said that the programme had been initiated by the CSIR on the advice of various committees who felt the need for scientific manpower development in the country which could be done by updating the knowledge of the teachers. He further said that the main aim of the scheme was adoption of two colleges by every CSIR lab and to continuously monitor and support their growth through such training and help in infrastructure development.

Dr Rao informed that NEIST on its own had been holding such awareness and motivational activities for students and teachers alike and more than 25,000 students had benefited from visiting research departments of NEIST and interacting with the scientists. He also mentioned that this workshop had been held by NEIST for the first time this year. The co-ordinator of the workshop Dr L Nath, Head Human Resource Development, NEIST outlined the different activities to be conducted under the programme. The trainee teachers interacted with NEIST scientists and lectures in the field of Robotics, Spectr-oscopic methods, LASER application in modern Science, modern concepts in Astrophysics, Nanote-chnology, Computational Chemistry, Green Chemistry, etc. A total of 23 teachers from NN Saikia College, Titabor, Bahona College, Jorhat, DKD College, Dergaon and DR College, Golaghat and from the Kendriya Vidyalaya School, NEIST participated in the workshop.
