6 more NITs for North East India

Six more NITs for Northeast

New Delhi, May 26: Six of the nine new National Institutes of Technology promised by the UPA government will be set up in the Northeast, one in each state without an NIT at present.

The human resource development ministry had written to the chief ministers of Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim asking them to allocate land for the NITs, senior officials told The Telegraph.

Assam and Tripura already have such institutes (in Silchar and Agartala).

The ministry had also written to the Puducherri, Goa and Uttarakhand administration where NITs will be set up, sources said.

The move follows controversial changes to the institutes’ admission policy last year that the northeastern states termed as discriminatory against regions traditionally backward in technical education.

The NITs admit students on the basis of their performance in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), a national-level test conducted by the CBSE.

Till last year, 50 per cent of the seats in the NITs were filled by domiciled candidates of the state in which the NIT is located. The states without NITs were also allocated reserved seats at other NITs, based on their population.

The rationale for the reservation was that most of the NITs were initially set up as Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) aimed at developing technical education in specific states.

A key precondition placed by states for the transfer of these institutes to the Centre as NITs was the continuation of reservation for students belonging to the respective states.

Last year, the HRD ministry changed the admission policy for the NITs. The move was considered controversial for two reasons:

The institutes are officially autonomous bodies and it is their apex decision making body, the NIT Council, and not the HRD ministry, that is empowered to alter the admission process.

Secondly the new admission policy also ended state-specific reservations, stipulating that all seats would be filled up on the basis of a student’s merit determined by performance in the AIEEE.

The end of reservations at the NITs was discriminatory against relatively less developed states, chief ministers of the northeastern states had complained to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a Rajya Sabha MP from Assam.

They feared that students from their states would no longer find minimum proportional representation at the NITs.

CBSE helpline flooded with calls from anxious students

New Delhi: A day before the class 12 results are declared, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) helplines on Thursday were flooded with phone calls from anxious students and parents.

As many as 37 principals, trained counsellors from CBSE affiliated government and private schools, psychologists and social scientists are operating these telephone helplines, interactive voice response system (IVRS) and online counseling individually from Wednesday.

These helplines will be functional till June 3.

"The response from students has been tremendous. I have lost count of the number of calls I have got since morning. Students are asking several questions as some of them are not satisfied with their performance and are scared of what might happen," Geetanjali Kumar, a professional career counsellor, told sources.

According to counsellors, the parents of students are more anxious than their children and are burdening them with the weight of their expectations.

"I have seen a lot of panic among students as well as parents. In fact, parents are more anxious than their children are and I requested all of them that they should try to differentiate between dreams and reality. They must apply logic and keep their expectations real," she added.

P.C. Bose, former deputy director (Education) and CBSE counsellor, says, "I have been getting calls from students who have scored very less marks in their pre-board exams. They are not only worried about their scores but also about the career, they should take up in future."

"My advice in general to all the students is that they should pursue graduation in whatever subject that comes natural to them," he added.

There are in all 18 helpline centres in India and three abroad - Dubai, Doha and Kuwait. Students can also log onto CBSE website www.cbse.nic.in to get information and techniques to cope with post-result anxiety.

This year, 637,578 students - 264,248 female candidates and 373,330 male candidates - took the class XII board exams in the country and abroad.

Many students are also seeking career guidance from the CBSE counsellors about what courses and subjects they should opt at university level, engineering and medical coaching facilities and taking competitive exams.

"The students are also interested in knowing about Delhi University cut offs and how to apply to other universities. Many students want to know about coaching facilities in the city for various competitive exams and reference material," said Anita Sharma, Principal of Sanatan Dharma Public School.

NGO Snehi has also started a helpline to deal with stressed students.

"It is a hope-line rather than a helpline. The students are nervous with just a day left for the results. They are anxious about what if they fail to meet their expectations," said Leela Dhawan, the coordinator of the helpline.IANS

Karnataka Government Offers Loan Subsidy to CET students

Karnataka Government Offers Loan Subsidy to CET students

Prospective students taking admissions to professional courses through the state government’s Common Entrance Test (CET) can apply for the government’s loan subsidy scheme. Under this, students can apply for loans at six per cent interest from any nationalized bank, with the state government paying the balance interest payment. The scheme was introduced for the first time in 2008 reports the Indian Express Bangalore

The loan subsidy scheme will be applicable to students, provided they are taking seats in engineering, medical, dental or Indian systems of medicine & homeopathy through CET conducted by Karnataka Examination Authority. The scheme is applicable for loans upto Rs five lakh. After getting a loan sanctioned by any nationalised bank, the student is eligible for the educational loan subsidy from the state government. While the student has to pay interest at six per cent, the balance interest will be paid by the government.

Guidelines state that the subsidy would be released periodically only if the student clears the earlier semester.

In case the student fails to clear any semester, and is not eligible to appear for the next semester, the subsidy will be stopped for the entire course. SOURCE: http://www.admissiondates.com/

AIIMS scraps 50% cut-off marks in MBBS entrance exam

TOI reports that Unable to fill all reserved category seats last year, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has decided to do away with 50% cut-off criteria in its AIIMS MBBS entrance exam from this academic session. The decision is likely to spark controversy as faculty members and junior doctors feel that this is is in violation of SC order, according to which, there ought to be cut-off marks in all medical entrance exams.

Now, if a reserved category student scores a zero or negative marks he/she can still get admission in AIIMS provided there is seat available in category he/she belongs to. According to rules, if reserved category seats are not filled, then these will filled up by general category students.

"Now, a reserved category student will get admission in AIIMS even if he/she scores zero in the entrance exam. A general category student with 50% marks will be rejected as the seat belongs to the reserved category. The 50% marks in entrance exam was a way to to get deserving students in AIIMS,'' said Dr Rahul Bhargava, president, Resident Doctors' Association, AIIMS.

According to Dr Sunil Chumber, sub-dean academics, AIIMS, "This is a hypothetical situation no one scores a zero in the entrance exam. And I don't want to comment on a situation which will never occur. Moreover, only those students are eligible to apply who have scored 50% marks in class 12.''

But senior faculty members feel that this will bring down the standard of India's premier medical institute. "If a student can't score a minimum of 50% in the entrance exam, how will he/she clear the regular exams which are part of the curriculum ? Are we going to lower the pass percentage of the regular exams conducted as part of the MBBS programme?'' asked a senior faculty member.

The MBBS entrance exam is scheduled for June 1 and there are around 77 seats in the course. Faculty members and resident doctors say that the scrapping of the 50% cut-off marks in entrance exam is against the Supreme Court order. "The SC order says that there should be a difference in cut-off marks between general and reserved category candidates. How can they (AIIMS administration ) scrap it on its own? This is against the SC order,'' said Dr Bhargava. source: T.O.I
