Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) Common Admission Test (CAT) 2009

Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow, and Shillong
The Indian Institutes of Management will conduct Common Admission Test (CAT) during Saturday, 28 November 2009 - Monday, 7 December 2009. CAT is conducted by IIMs as a pre-requisite for admission to various management programmes of IIMs. These programmes are:

1. Post Graduate Programmes in Management

IIM Ahmedabad PGP, PGP-ABM and PGP-PMP

IIM Bangalore PGP, PGSEM and PGPPM

IIM Calcutta PGP-PGDM and PGP-PGDCM

IIM Indore PGP and EPGP

IIM Kozhikode PGP

IIM Lucknow PGP and PGP-ABM

RGIIM Shillong PGP

2. Fellow Programmes in Management (FPM) [equivalent to PhD] of IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Indore, IIM Kozhikode, and IIM Lucknow.

Separate advertisements will appear for the Fellow Programme of each institute as well as PGP-ABM of MM Ahmedabad and IIM Lucknow, PGSEM and PGPPM Programmes of IIM Bangalore, PGDCM Programme of IIM Calcutta, and the EPGP of IIM Indore. Each IIM follows its own admission process independent of other IIMs. Before a prospective candidate makes a decision to appear for CAT, he/she must visit the websites and/or read programme advertisements of the concerned IIMs to ensure which programmes they want to apply for and what are the eligibility requirements and admission processes. List of non-IIM member institutions that have registered to avail the CAT 2009 scores is provided at www.catiim.in. CAT score use is restricted only for admission to IIMs and non-IIM member institutions. A candidate can appear for CAT 2009 only once during the 10-day testing window.

Eligibility:

The candidate must hold a Bachelor's Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA [45% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Differently Abled (DA)1 categories], awarded by any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.

The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate in the bachelor's degree would be calculated based on the practice followed by the university/institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree. In case the candidates are awarded grades/CGPA instead of marks, the conversion of grades/CGPA to percentage of marks would be based on the procedure certified by the university/ institution from where they have obtained the bachelor's degree. In case the university/ institution does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate's CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result with 100.

Candidates appearing for the final year of bachelor's degree/equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed degree requirements and are awaiting results can also apply. IIMs may verify eligibility at various stages of the selection process, the details of which are provided at the www.catiim.in.

Computer-Based CAT, not Internet-Based CAT Notification

Computer-Based, not Internet-Based CAT 2009

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have announced admissions to various management programmes offered at the institutes located at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow and Shillong through the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2009.

In an official release, the IIMs have clarified that CAT 2009 would be a Computer Based Test (CBT) and not an Internet Based Test (IBT).

"A candidate would not take the CAT 2009 on an Internet site. Instead of reading the questions in a paper booklet and darkening the ovals on the answer-sheet, a candidate will read the questions on a computer terminal and choose an answer by clicking on the correct option", the IIMs said.

A candidate can take the test only at designated test venues in 30 cities across India.

CAT 2009 would be held between November 28, 2009 and December 7, 2009.

The computer based CAT will be candidate-friendly, flexible in the selection of test date, ease registration process, provide better physical environment and test experience, and enhanced security in terms of biometric identification of candidates and video monitoring.

IIT-Delhi earns more from research than government grants

New Delhi, Aug 30: Contrary to perceptions that Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are not doing enough research, IIT-Delhi has earned over Rs 102 crore (Rs 1.2 billion) in a year from research projects, more than what the government gives it as annual grant.

Sponsored research saw a major growth in the number of projects as well as in revenue earning during 2008-09. “The earning from sponsored research is growing year after year. Now our earnings are more than the government’s recurring aid of Rs.100 crore to us. This is a landmark,” M Balakrishnan, dean of post-graduate studies at IIT-Delhi told. He said the top technology school has managed to earn Rs 102.81 crore (Rs 1.28 billion) last year up from Rs 28.2 crore (Rs 282 million) in 2004-05 and Rs 84 crore (Rs 840 million) in 2007-08. “This is contrary to belief that we are very poor on research output,” Balakrishnan said.

Balakrishnan said that during the 2008-09 period, the faculty undertook 27 international projects including seven from US defence aircraft manufacturer Lockheed Martin. Other foreign bodies who came to IIT-Delhi for help include Canada’s International Development Research Centre and departments of science and technology of Germany and Britain. Organisations from Sri Lanka, Kenya, France, Switzerland and Japan too got involved with the top engineering school for research work. Among Indian organisations, Bharti Airtel, Aeronautical Development Agency, Indian Council of Agricultural Research and various central and state government ministries sought IIT-Delhi’s assistance to seek solutions. Education a matter of concern in NC Hills

GUWAHATI, Aug 29: The ongoing violence in NC Hills has drastically created a grim scenario for the school children in the strife-torn district. According to sources, 6,000 children among 16,791 people are currently taking shelter in 42 relief camps set up in various institutions of NC Hills due to the ongoing violence in the district. The number of children taking shelter in relief camps is a matter of deep concern. Some relief camps have been set up in Maibong Government ME School, Delaisa LP School/Delaisa Club, Nobdi Langting ME and LP School.

According to reports, 586 people are taking shelter in the Maibong Government ME School since May 8, 2009. On the other hand, 66 inmates of the Naga community are taking shelter in Delaisa LP School/Delaisa Club since June 20, 2009, and 554 inmates of the Dimasa community are taking shelter in Nobdi Langting ME and LP School since July 10.

Sources further said although human rights is getting priority across the globe, the picture is completely opposite in NC Hills. Human rights violation has become a part of the social life here. And the most affected from this violence are the children and their education.

It is to be noted that the government has introduced several important acts to protect children rights but these are not being enjoyed by the children in the NC Hills. Therefore, unless the Central and the State Government undertake some concrete steps in this regard, the fate of these children will remain uncertain and if this situation continues, there is every possibility of these children inclining towards insurgency. Cotton College: hopes and reality — Amal Kumar Das

“Cottonians rule Assam” - so the dictum goes. Anywhere and everywhere, be it administration, education, medical, engineering, law, journalism, communication and certainly in politics, the presence of the Cottonians has been in the commanding height. Till the establishment of University of Gauhati, higher education in Assam meant college education and college education began with Cotton College in 1901. The glamour of Cotton College bewitched the youths in their teens who dreamt of becoming a part of the college; tradition and heritage built by successive generations leaving their footprints in the campus of the college

The name and fame of Cotton College spread far and wide. Even when the college was within the jurisdiction of the University of Calcutta, Cotton College shone like a star and stood by the side of famous Presidency College. But now when Cotton College has crossed centenary celebrations, a bizarre scenario has unfolded when light is dim. We can take a nostalgic view and reminisce on the light of other days, but the college, which was our destination, and before us of several generations, has fallen from grace, Cotton College does not shine among the top 50 colleges of India not to speak of among the best 10. What is more, the college that once enjoyed a position by the side of Presidency College; there stand St Xavier’s, Lady Brabourne, Ashutosh College, Bethune College, Scotish Church College, Maulana Azad College within the top 50 colleges of India. St. Xavier’s and Presidency College have the position within the best 10.

The above picture is presented by a survey by two National Journals “India Today” and the ‘Outlook’. However for convenience, the facts and figures are reproduced from “India Today” of June 22 Issue (2009).

Placewise distribution of the top 50 colleges is as follows — Chennai (A) 10 (S) 8, Delhi (A) 10(S) 8, Mumbai (A) 8 (S) 11, Kolkata (A) 5 (S) 6, Hyderabad (A) 4 (S) 6, Bangalore (A) 4 (S) 5, Ahmedabad (A) 3 (B) 2, Kochi (A) 3 (S) 2, Chandigarh (A) 1, Pune (S) 1, Jaipur (S) 1.

The above presents a picture that India’s best Arts and Science Colleges are concentrated in Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, closely followed by Ahmedabad and Kochi that also shows the emergence of Chandigarh, Pune and Jaipur. What is conspicuous the graph is dominant in the south with three centres of Chennai, Hyderabad and Kochi; Mumbai shines in the west with Ahmedabad and Pune; Delhi with premier position receives additional premium from Chandigarh and Jaipur in the north. In the east, it is only Kolkata and nothing but Kolkata that steals the show with expansion of base within the city. The graph ends there and does not move eastward when once famous Cotton College pales into insignificance.

Several yardsticks are applied in ranking the colleges. Cotton College was not downsized without reason. The century old college has certainly gathered some muscles with expansion of physical structure with the coming up of new buildings and yet the college lacks the basic infrastructural facilities. Although difficult to believe, the century old college does not have a playground. When the Newfield was taken over by the Sports Authority of India, the college authority meekly gave in. The hostels are dilapidated. At a time when some efforts of reconstructing hostels bore some fruits, the proposal was shelved for protest in the name of preservation of heritage buildings. It is true, hostel dwellers of the past might have some emotional attachment with the hostels they once lived in, but the fact remains, it concerns a specific group. To the general Cottonians, the overpowering Administrative Building that stood as a ‘Heritage Building’ for hundred years was more important. But when that Administrative Building was demolished, all were shy of raising voice against the action. Emotion is a part in life, but emotion is not to be allowed to fly so high that it embarrasses developmental initiatives. However there is always a meeting ground where perceptions of varying degrees can be reconciled.

But the issue that concerns the Cottonians enormously is the downward trend of the functioning of the institution. All are anxious now to bring back the lost glory. There are allegations of administrative lapse, negligence of duty on the part of some members of the teaching staff and HOD’S submissiveness too. Opinion varies on the role of the government. While it is alleged that there is interference of the government leading to facilitating backdoor entry of teachers below the mark that has adversely affected the standard, there is also an opinion that the government is indifferent to the needs of the college. To get rid of the hurdles, there is a suggestion to upgrade the college into a ‘Deemed University’. The status will provide autonomy to the college and keep it free from unwanted government pressure. The approach appears to be simplistic and falls short of positing a roadmap. Have the conditions of sustaining Cotton College as the government college become invalid or is converting the college into a ‘Deemed University’ – the only panacea to save this glorious institution from all ills? We need suggestions from the able and the experienced.

The college must have a vision. We are of the opinion that a committee of high standing educationists, administrators, noted intellectuals should be constituted to go through the entire gamut of the problems to suggest the steps and the roadmap to regain the glories of the past. The committee will study the problems of the college and also the way of functioning of some of the top colleges mentioned and spell out where the Cotton College lacks in. If needed the committee can also include reputed educationists from some of the aforesaid colleges for guidance. The committee will make observation on the status quo i.e. Cotton College as a government college to be maintained or the college needs upgradation into a ‘Deemed University’ status and if so, autonomy upto what extent, the system of fiscal discipline, existing loophols of recruitment if any, creation of infrastructural facilities. What we want – the confusion must be put to rest and the college must receive a direction to arrive at a position when Cotton College can stand ‘among the great’ – ‘The top colleges of India.”
