How to Ace Your B-School Interview in India

How to Ace Your B-School Interview in India

It’s one of the more prestigious degrees in India, but because just about every university offers it, an MBA increases in value proportional to the status of the college that offers it. So if you were to get into the premier IIM institutes, you would graduate as the cream of the crop. But before you get past the threshold of any B-School, you need to first clear the written exam and then cross the interview stage. While the exam is mostly a piece of cake for the studious and those of academic bent, the interview is a whole new cup of tea. You need to appear confident without being cocky, knowledgeable without being a know-it-all, and eager to get in without being subservient to your interviewers. In general, here’s what you need to do to ace your B-School interview:

•    Be prepared: The thing about preparation is that not everyone knows how to do it the right way; we all prepare for tests and interviews, but the real key to acing interviews is to be prepared to answer any kind of question that’s thrown at you. You need to be prepared to deviate from your prepared script and answer confidently, and if you don’t know the answer to a question, you must be prepared to admit to the fact rather than fudge your way through. In general however, your interview questions will deal with why you want to do an MBA and why you want to get into this particular B-School, so be prepared to answer to the best of your ability.

•    Be yourself: Don’t try to put on airs and be something you’re not in an attempt to impress the interviewer. This usually has a negative effect and you’re shown in a poor light. Rather, be natural and answer the questions as best as you can without trying to go overboard or giving over the top answers.

•    Be serious: An interview is not the time for jokes, either self-deprecatory or otherwise. You need to look and be serious and portray yourself as a dignified future businessperson. Your interviewers must be satisfied that you are serious about your future and the path you have chosen to reach your goal.

•    Be sincere: You may be a happy-go-lucky person, but that’s not the attitude to adopt during an interview. You must show the interviewers that you are serious about getting into the institution because it is your first choice and not because you have no other alternative. When your sincerity comes across genuinely, you’ve made an impression with the panel.

Prepare for your interview based on the school you choose and customize each preparation according to the particular curriculum and college. This way, you boost your chance of success.
